I’m so happy to announce that Pittsburgh DJ Kelli Burns of Kelli Burns DJ Entertainment has a blog ! Please make it a point to visit Kelli’s blog RIGHT NOW to congratulate her on her new endeavor, and visit often to comment on her posts.   Then, stay tuned (pun intended!) for her informative and fun posts on news and entertainment in the music industry and for your event.

Below is an image of Kelli from Beth and Andy’s wedding that we had the pleasure to work together on:

c_Joanne Bartone Photographer

Kelli has 23 years of experience in the greater Pittsburgh area where she has DJ-ed hundreds of wonderful weddings to the delight of her clients and their guests, and has been exclusively procured to DJ for innumerable creme de la creme events around the city. Kelli readily volunteers her entertainment expertise to many important causes and she is well known and highly regarded throughout the Pittsburgh event community.

Besides Kelli’s stellar professional reputation, she’s a great person; both fun and fun-loving, but always a top notch professional when spinning an event. I can attest to her professionalism and abilities first hand after working with her. Kelli’s dedication to “Making that one moment in time even more memorable,” as her tag-line reads, represents a solid commitment to her approach to her work, and she delivers on it!

Kelli is a member of many prestigious professional organizations including Toastmasters, which has served her well when she is in front of your event guests. Kelli’s ability to speak with complete command and elegance while maintaining the balance of not being overbearing or stuffy at events is, well to quote musician Thomas Dolby, “like poetry in motion!”  I am thoroughly impressed by her abilities.  And to quote Bob Sendall of All in Good Taste Productions, he describes Kelli as “The best of the best.”  Agreed Bob!

Kelli and I first met earlier this year and hit it off so spectacularly that we decided to share office space in order to closely collaborate on projects together and promote our businesses.  Our business meetings consist of progress and work, but we have a lot of fun while wearing our business hats!  In fact, we are offering a service to clients seeking photographers and DJs for weddings and other events - contact either of us for more information.  And, we are planning a launch party to celebrate our collaborative efforts to be held at a to be determined date and location this coming October - stay tuned to both of our blogs for information on that!

The following images are clear evidence of our camaraderie and our silliness - Kelli’s the good looking one on the right!  ;-) :

So, if you are seeking to hire a DJ for your wedding or private/corporate event, contact Kelli - I highly recommend Kelli Burns of Kelli Burns DJ Entertainment, mostly because she ROCKS!

Jenna + Aaron’s wedding was so beautiful and so much fun to photograph!  Once again, blessed by the fact that I get to work with some really wonderful families and people, this was one of those occasions - which truly does happen often for me! - where I fell in love with everyone!  I am such a fortunate person…

Married at Sacred Heart Church in Shadyside (can you believe they don’t have a link?!), their ceremony could not help to be beautiful due to the majesty of the church itself; it was simply lovely.  It’s always been one of my favorite churches to photograph in…

The Pittsburgh Field Club in Fox Chapel was chosen as the venue for the reception.  It was dressed to the nines and they did a really spectacular job with the event!  Eric Schiemer of Schiemer Entertainment Services did a fabulous job entertaining the guests with some great tunes that kept everyone happily dancing all night long!  And besides that, there was this fabulous slide show Eric put together from video clips of Jenna when she was little; it was so sweet and special…  GREAT job Eric!  Can’t wait to work with you again - let’s not make it so long between events!  Eric is a great guy and DJ; make sure you contact him for your event!

Ok, on to the images - ENJOY!

Joanne Bartone Photographer

Jenna’s mother, Patty so badly wanted a portrait of Jenna reflected in a mirror.  Why?  Because that was one of the images special to her on her own wedding day.  This was a must-have for Patty and I made sure to deliver!

Joanne Bartone Photographer

Additional classic portraits: the window silhouettes in the window before we left the house and Jenna with her father, just before they walked down that long beautiful aisle at Sacred Heart!  Love these images!  Classic and timeless…

Joanne Bartone Photographer

Sooooooooooo, the priest did not offer a “you may kiss the bride” to Aaron, and of course I immediately realized that when photographing, so as Aaron + Jenna were recessing down the aisle I asked them to stop and kiss so we would have their ceremonial church kiss after they were married.  Now, to stop them went against everything in my document-the-event-as-it-happened thinking, but I knew that the kiss is important to all couples, so I felt it was my responsibility to orchestrate it before the opportunity was lost.  It was a tough call/decision on my part, but I think Jenna + Aaron will appreciate that I did.  And the expression on their guest’s faces helps make the image happy and exciting!

As an FYI for anyone having a Catholic ceremony, the kiss is NOT part of the Catholic marriage service.  You must tell your priest that you want to include it, and then they typically allow for it either during the sign of peace or before you recess down the aisle.  Then of course, be sure to tell your photographer when the kiss will occur so they can capture it.  And lastly, grooms everywhere, make sure you make that kiss count - at least 3 seconds, if not a bit longer, so your photographer can capture it!  I’m just saying…and, I mean, make it count!  You are married after all!

Joanne Bartone Photographer

Some beautiful portraits of Aaron + Jenna: on the left, just after they recessed down the aisle, and then when we were exiting the church, on the right…those details!…those windows!

I’ll title these images above “Joanne’s Artful Eye.”  Always looking for different ways to document AND create art from weddings, I thoroughly observe my surroundings until I see interesting points of view and complex compositions that I can use to create unique images for my clients.  These images portray some of those interesting points of view I see when I am in the throes of my creative observation process.  Notice that each image seems to be a mirror image; well, they actually are…I took the photo on the left with the camera pointed directly at Aaron + Jenna while they were having dinner from outside the doorway to the dining room.  Then, from the same position, I turned to the right where the reflection of Aaron + Jenna was seen in the mirrored glass of the doors.  I added the window frame of the door in both images to: 1. add an additional frame while composing the image within the frame of the camera , 2. add an architectural element to the image, and 3. make the images interesting.  I LOVE these two shots a lot and think they are a wonderful representation of how I create my art while documenting weddings!

As always, it was such an absolute honor and pleasure to spend the day with all of you!  Thank you for having me as your photographer, and now friend!

I don’t know where to begin to share my thoughts on Beth and Andy’s wedding, other than perhaps by saying the word ‘ WOW !’

This was an event of tremendously beautiful proportions!  Like all of my weddings, I created so many beautiful images from Beth and Andy’s wedding that I had a difficult time choosing what to post!  So, what I’ve decided to do is to post a handful of images now then I’ll create a slide show filled with the grandeur of the day and add it to this post in a few days!

…as i mentioned, WOW!   On the day of Beth and Andy’s wedding it was raining, and raining, and storming and raining, and Beth’s request to me was, “All I want is beautiful pictures from the day.”  Andy is an Art Teacher at a prestigious private boy’s school so, like it is with all my couples, I wanted to deliver badly for them.  I can say without hesitation that I delivered on your wishes Beth, and beyond my own expectations and I truly believe you are going to LOVE them!

Beth and Andy met on the top of one of the ski slopes at Seven Springs, so it was only fitting for them to have their wedding ceremony and reception in the Laurel Mountains at Beth’s parent’s beautiful home, where the “views” are truly spectacular vistas of the beautiful countryside.  Their wedding happened to fall on one of our rainy June weekends and we weren’t sure the weather would cooperate with us, but I always trust and am always given opportunities, and as you can see, the storm clouds parted long enough for me to create some really dramatic and stunningly beautiful images of and for Beth and Andy!

cJoanne Bartone Photographer

The beautiful natural setting of the Shanefelter’s home was transformed into sheer elegance, bar none, by the wonderfully creative and talented Bob Sendall, owner of All In Good Taste Productions, famous for dressing and coordinating many of the creme de la creme events around Pittsburgh and beyond.  No detail was spared, from the ceremony to the reception, which resulted in total comfort for guests and a magical setting and party for Beth and Andy!  Wow!  Bravo, and thank you Bob!  You made the event so visually stunning which gave us a canvas with which to create beautiful memories for Beth, Andy and their families!  Here’s Bob with Andy and Beth…

Joanne Bartone Photographer

This composite doesn’t even begin to encompass the visual splendor created by Bob and his tireless team!

Joanne Bartone Photographer

The elegant, sophisticated and smooth presence of Kelli Burns of Kelli Burns DJ Entertainment was phenomenal as well!  Kelli is a true Master of Ceremonies and much, much more than just a DJ.  Kelli MADE the party with her comfortable command and fun approach to introductions and her contemporary ability to spin music that transformed the party into a NYC club setting where she kept the dance floor filled and the party rocking all night!  In my professional opinion, Kelli Burns has the perfect combination of elegance, sophistication and experience where she brings out the best in an event. I’m not sure I know how to convey her abilities accurately, but Kelli has a wonderful ability to know how to create the flow of an event through the way she speaks to your guests, the way she carries herself and the way she entertains with music.  Bravo to you too, Kelli!  You are AWESOME!

Joanne Bartone Photographer

Here’s a few more select images that will offer a bit of the flavor of Beth and Andy’s special day…

Portraits of Andy and Beth in the majestic setting of Beth’s parents property in the Laurel Highlands.

With the rain in the mountains - and there was a LOT of it! - came beautiful dramatic skies filled with perfect clouds!

Joanne Bartone Photographer

At sunset the sun came streaming in beneath the clouds and with the sun came more dramatic and romantic images of Beth and Andy!  What a gift!

Joanne Bartone Photographer

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that one of my previous wedding couples, Alyssa and Michael whose wedding I photographed in 2004, sent Beth and Andy my way!  You see, Alyssa and Beth have been good friends for forever, and, well, you know how the story goes…!  Thanks guys; I’m always grateful and happy for the referrals.

Joanne Bartone Photographer

Again, I’ll be posting a slide show soon, that will have many more beautiful images from Beth and Andy’s wedding, so stay tuned.

I’m telling you, with each and every wedding I photograph, and with each and every couple I work with I have to walk away pinching myself for all the love and beauty I get to create from and capture, and all the wonderful couples and people I get to meet and work with.  I am always so grateful for my work and so grateful for ALL OF YOU!

At Kristen and Ian’s beautiful wedding it was all about special people (even of the four-legged variety) and special moments; moments of pure joy and love throughout!  It was a wonderful day and I loved every aspect of it!  Thanks for having me with you, and thanks for the ride ;-)

I loved the church: St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Harrison City - it was beautiful and had perfect light!

Here come some of the fun moments of the ceremony! There was a little input from the guests, much to Ian’s delight!

Ian had to recall what it was that family and friends said was important in a relationship before the priest would marry them. If I recall correctly, I believe it was respect, friendship and communication. Ian got it right even if I didn’t!

Wow; what a whirl-wind of a day it was yesterday, and I’m not talking about the windy weather! This was one fast-paced and fun-filled day of BIG love!

Beth and Brad’s wedding was energetic and fun which is exactly the kind of people they are!  Married at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper Saint Clair, Beth followed in the footsteps of her parent’s and sister’s previous ceremonies held here and Beth was as stunning as stunning could be in her form-fitting gown (designer and salon to be named later…)!  The wedding was rich with traditions including a forty-five year old princes lace veil that Beth’s great grandmother purchased in Belgium, a sixpence in her shoe from her grandmother and a handmade ring pillow from her sister’s wedding. These are precious ways to continue traditions that hold such meaning for the family.

The ceremony was perfect - lighting in the church couldn’t have been more spectacular - and the party followed at the Twentieth Century Club which was dressed to the “nines” and jam-packed with great food, music and fun!  What a night!

One of my favorite things at the reception was the guest book: Beth and Brad took a coffee-table photo book of images of Los Angeles (where they live, as Beth is the Senior Associate Producer of the Dr. Phil Show and Brad works as a Distribution and Entertainment leader in Digital Advertising at Ripe Digital) and had guests choose a page/image in the book and write their wishes to the couple!  It was a great break from the standard guest books at weddings - a book with meaning for Beth and Brad that was amplified with the wishes of people who mean so much to them.  Great idea!

Here are some of the fabulous images we created throughout the day - we meaning Karen and I - ENJOY!

Images by Karen: great job, if I must say so myself!  Karen had multiple killer shots throughout the day…

We had a handful of families turn out for the Military Love Shoot a couple of weeks ago.  I can’t convey enough what a pleasure it was for me to do this for the families and soldiers serving our country.  The families I met were special and wonderful, and very grateful for my service to them - in the big scheme of things, what I did was minuscule, but I hope it will have provided each soldier serving away from their families and homes some small piece of comfort and joy.

Marjorie Henderson of Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum did not hesitate one bit to donate the space for the families to come to be photographed in. If you are not familiar with S+S Hall, it is a beautiful venue in Pittsburgh that holds MANY a beautiful wedding, so if you are looking for a great setting with attentive staff, call or email Marjorie by clicking here. I’m going to donate a photo session for military families for the remaining three quarters of this year so that other families who couldn’t make it to this session can make it to one of the next remaining sessions - dates/times will be announced at a later date/post once Marjorie and I coordinate our schedules!

I thought I’d share some of the images I created for the families, and one of Marjorie.  Thank you, once again, to the families who came out, to their brave family members who are serving in the Military, to all of our Military personnel who so selflessly give so much to and for us every day and to Marjorie and S+S Hall!  I hope you enjoy the BEAUTIFUL faces filled with love below!

I’m a former Social Worker; I worked in the field for seventeen years. I left that field at the height of my career as the Director of an Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center to return to school for photography, but you can’t take the social worker out of the photographer!  I’ve never stopped thinking, ‘How can I continue to be of service to people?’

The answer to that question came to me last month when I saw a report on the National News where many soldiers enduring tours in Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering with relationship problems, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), morale issues, severe depression and heartbreaking record numbers of suicide.  I can’t even begin to express how that news report affected me…I felt that I needed to reach out to help in some small way.

So, I took my desire to reach out to help and put it into action.  My thought process was, that I personally know and understand he power of a photograph; I’ve witnessed it in my own life and through the eyes of my clients as I make countless couples happy through my wedding photography all through the year, so I knew I had to reach out to our military personnel and their families to try to make a small difference for them.  And, so my idea and desire to help is coming to life!

Whether or not you or I agree with the war, or the policies of our government, all of which are neither here nor there, these brave men and women are the people who have to endure the hardship of their service in a thankless job meant to make a difference for so many at their expense, sacrifice and detriment. Yes, they signed up for the job, but these are not just soldiers, they are human beings; people with feelings and struggles just like you and I and they deserve HOPE.  I say if “hope” is the latest buzz-word in our nation, how about we all “put our money where our mouths are” and make a difference by reaching out to others and by DOING ANYTHING that might make a difference for one person or for many!

Click on the photo to read the story on this little gift I couldn’t resist giving:

Joanne Bartone Photographer Photo: Andrew Russell/Tribune-Review

I would encourage everyone, from all walks of life, to reach out to help those in need no matter who they are, no matter who you are.  Find a situation that speaks to your heart, as I did in this one small instance, and MAKE the time to do something about it. It might be as simple as reaching out to a neighbor in need, or to a cause or a charity; anything will do.  Imagine how much better the world would be if we all could spread a little more love and compassion - after all, we really do get back what we give.

I will post more about my experience and the interesting things I learned about reaching out to soldiers with my gift in my next post after the event!  Look for part 2 next week!

A while back, when I was walking down the yellow-brick road… …no, wait; that’s not the subject!  The sweet, lovely and wonderful Katherine Shaw of Trends to Traditions is the subject - Katherine is one of Pittsburgh’s finest wedding/event planners! But both entries would be apropos, as the planning and execution of an event can be a bit like Dorothy’s journey through Oz: exciting, overwhelming, lots to consider and with many lessons to be learned in the end.  This is why I recommend hiring a wedding planner, and Katherine is one that you can trust to thoroughly meet your needs!  Here’s a photo of her in action from a wedding we worked on together September ‘08 and another when she attended my Event Planners Appreciation Night just this past October…she’s just a sweetie:

c.Joanne Bartone Photographer

For my BUZZ by JB interviews, I send out a few questions for the interviewee to answer, and I think you’ll agree that you get a real sense of why Katherine is so successful in the industry, and how thorough she is when working with couples who are willing to trust in her abilities and work WITH her!  Here are the questions and Katherine’s answers:

JB: What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

KS: Everyone is so different-from the way they meet, fall in love, and interact with each other. I like to become acquainted with and learn about my clients’ personalities, passions, and unique relationships. Then, I take great pride in producing an event for them that represents who they are, what they stand for, and what they like about the world. I love ‘love’ and I love to be in the lives of couples who are experiencing the newness and excitement of finding their special person. I also enjoy creating and developing artistic and colorful elements that reflect each couple’s uniqueness. It makes me happy to see the idea of a beautiful ceremony and the hopes of an amazing party come to life. I receive great fulfillment when my clients tell me that their guests have told them that their wedding day was the most amazing that they have ever seen. I feel proud that my creativity is able to bring so much joy to others.

JB: What is the most important advice or recommendation you have for your future and actual clients, whether it’s for day-of planning or for full-event planning?

KS: Wow, how do I narrow this down? I have so many recommendations. Location, location, location!

JB: What are the top three aspects of planning that you feel contribute to making an event successful?

KS: I will try to limit this to my top three, although I feel as though I should/could write a book! LOGIC: Do not create an unrealistic scenario. “Elegance in simplicity.” This is not to say that an event cannot be extraordinary, vibrant and lavish. I just mean that you should plan a day that allows you and the guests to relax, enjoy and celebrate with ease. Consider having the ceremony and reception in the same place, perhaps. Look at your plans and make sure that you have sufficient time and a sufficient setting to carry out your dreams. If you are planning an outdoor ceremony (especially in Pittsburgh), make sure that your plan B is a solid plan B and that all is in line to easily and quickly move to plan B when the weather is not cooperating!  DETAILS: When you create a timeline, you need to be very specific. The timeline cannot just say “2:00-cut the cake.” That is the “what and the when.” Now you need the “who, where and how.” For example: who will cut the cake? how will they cut it? where will the knife and serving set be located? after they cut it, who will serve it, and upon what will they serve it? where will these plates come from and who will wash them? In other words, its’ all about that fabulously detailed timeline. A truly successful event does not just magically happen. It’s all aobut the careful, organized and well thought out timeline. A truly successful event is successful because the preparations have been handled appropriately and with logic. The timelines I create for my clients (including all of the behind the scenes happennings) are sometimes 27 pages in length. ATTITUDE: The personalities of those around you make all the differenc in the world! I always tell my clients to hire vendors who treat you well and smile often. Family; well, that’s a little trickeir. Seriously, skill and talent are, although vitally important, only half of the story. You want to surround yourself with vendors and friends who will be happy for you and nice to you. You want people who truly want your day to be fantastic and have your best interest at heart to be with you. In regards to family, well…those who will bring you down should really be sitting down somewhere in the back row at the ceremony and far enough away from you at the reception where you won’t be affected. While keeping the real meaning of love and union at the forefront, a wedding celebration is definitely an event that should be organized, run, rehearsed and directed with precision and detail.  Guests should not be bored: they should have fun! With careful thought and creative style, your wedding day will be talked about and remembered with joy, forever!

JB: Who is your favorite photographer to work with? ..just joking, but I coldn’t resist!  I’ll leave the answer up to your imagination but here’s a hint as to what Katherine said…

KS: Why, Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx, of course!

JB: hahahahahahahahaha!!! …humor is a beautiful thing! ;-)

As someone who pretty much lives and breathes the wedding industry, I feel that those of us who know quality service providers are obligated to pass that information on to POTENTIAL and actual clients alike. On your wedding day, I want you to be surrounded with vendors who will do a good job for you and take very good care of you before and on your wedding day - a happy couple makes for beautiful images! Then after your wedding, it’s up to me to take care of you for the rest of your lives! I like that!  Follow the links in my blog entries; they will lead you to some really wonderful wedding vendors!

Congratulations Joy + Steve!!!

Joy and Steve were married on New Years Eve at the Sheraton, Station Square.  Their event was an intimate affair; perfect and simply beautiful!

Many of the details - which were stunning - were made with love by Joy herself with help from the wonderful Simone Hudson of 5Senses Events Design who coordinated every detail of Joy and Steve’s special day - you can see my “interview” with Simone that I did in October with her at this link - it was this interview that helped Joy decide upon using Simone’s services! - Simone is a delight to work with and I highly recommend her to anyone planning any type of an event.

The image here is just one of the examples of cooperative creativity between Joy and Simone…

Kristin and Paul’s wedding was picturesquely beautiful! Heinz Chapel and The Carnegie were the backdrops for their ceremony and celebration; everything was perfect…well, except for that little snafu with the maid of honor’s zipper in her dress! But, as with all snafus, everything worked out perfectly and the day was joyful and fun.

Beautiful day + beautiful details + beautiful settings ALWAYS = beautiful photographs!

Hopefully the few images posted will help everyone hold on a bit longer while the remaining images are being processed. I am confident you will love them when you see them!
